IBM To Acquire Marketing Solutions Provider Silverpop For Undisclosed Amount

IBM released a statement today confirming it has entered into an agreement to acquire email and marketing automation solutions provider Silverpop for an undisclosed amount.
Originally launched as an email marketing company, Silverpop has evolved its offering to include marketing automation and personalization solutions.
Listing brands like Mazda and Stonyfield Farm as Silverpop customers, IBM says the acquisition will extend its client base by 8,000 organizations across 50 countries, as well as add to its portfolio of more than 100 SaaS solutions.
“Now, nearly any marketing, commerce or customer service professional from any business will have the ability to deliver the kinds of personalized customer experiences that make a measurable impact on the brand experience and the bottom line,” said IBM GM of industry cloud solutions Craig Hayman.
While IBM did not share financial details of the deal, it claims the acquisition is expected to close during Q2 of this year.

IAB: $43 Billion In 2013 Digital Ad Revenue, Mobile Doubles

The IAB has just released its annual report on US digital advertising. The trade association said that Q4 2013 revenues hit $12.1 billion and full year revenues were $42.8 billion, beating broadcast TV (though not TV in total) for the first time.
The 2013 numbers grew by 17 percent over 2012. Last year the IAB reported $36.6 billion in full year ad revenue.
One of the highlights, mobile ad revenue hit nearly $7.1 billion, doubling from last year’s $3.4 billion. Digital video also grew significantly to reach nearly $3 billion. Search, which continued to be the largest single category of online advertising, saw revenues of $18.4 billion or 43 percent of total 2013 revenue.

Strikingly “mobile” (which includes multiple formats) was almost as big as online display. Mobile now represents 17 percent of the total, up from 9 percent last year.

Dove’s New “Beauty Patch” Ad Tells Women Low Self-Esteem Issues Are All In Their Head

Hoping to catch the viral success of its original “Beauty Sketches” campaign, Dove has launched a new “Patches” ad built on the premise that women’s self esteem issues are all in our head.
In the new ad, “Psychologist and distinguished scholar at Columbia University” conducts a research project, inviting women to use the “revolutionary” RB-X patch, developed to “Enhance the way women perceive their own beauty.”
The research participants are asked to apply the patch and keep a video diary, logging how they feel about themselves from day to day. The ad includes clips of the participants saying, at first, they don’t feel a change, but then over the course of 10-days feeling more confidant. One woman tells the camera, “I feel beautiful no matter if I’m sick, tired, or the fact there’s a pimple on my nose.”
What the women don’t learn until the end is that the patch they applied is actually a placebo, a simple sticker with zero medicinal qualities.

Buffer’s iOS App Upgrade Gives It The Power Of The Desktop

Buffer, the social media scheduling and discovery tool, upgraded its iOS app today and says it now offers most of the features of its desktop client.
Like Klout, which also released an iOS app upgrade this week, Buffer touts its service as solution for people who want to boost their social media activity without spending all day on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn.
The service enables users to write a series of social posts and set them to trickle out during the day. It also has a content suggestion feature for those who need help with finding interesting information to share.
Now Buffer users will be able to better manage that effort while they are on the go. The redesign, optimized for iOS7, provides full control of scheduling and editing posts, real-time updates to the Buffer queue (even when not using the app), the ability to send native retweets on Twitter and the full engagement analytics offered on the desktop version.

Nonprofit Save The Children Takes No. 1 Spot On YouTube’s March Ads Leaderboard

Following the recent introduction of its quarterly Brand Channel Leaderboard, YouTube has posted a March Ads Leaderboard, ranking its top ten paid ads for last month based on viewcount.
According to YouTube, the No. 1 video ad for the month is from a nonprofit organization. With over 28 millions views, Save the Children UK’s “Most Shoking Second a Day” video outranked videos from brands like Samsung, Old Spice and Subaru.
There is a notable disparity between the number of views for the top two videos and the rest of the list. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 videos generated over 20 million views each, while the No. 3 ranked ad from Old Spice earned under five million views.
Samsung took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, with its “Official Introduction” ad for the Galaxy S5 phone winning over 23 million views, and its “Galaxy S5 Official Hands-on” video earning over three million views.
The tenth ranked video, an ad from The Oregon Tourism Commission, earned only 104,561 views.

Facebook Moves To Boost The Size Of Ads In The Right-Hand Column

Facebook is increasing the size of its right-hand column ads. The move, announced today in a Facebook for Business blog post, is intended to make such ads more prominent and visually consistent those appearing in users’ News Feeds.
Here’s the new look compared to the current offering:


Of note, according to Facebook:

Facebook users will see fewer right-column ads.
In testing of the new design, it has seen up to three times more engagement with ads.
Marketers’ Facebook ad production process will be simplified because they will be able to use the same images for News Feed and right-column ads.

Facebook says it will be offering the new ad product to some advertisers later this month and rolling it out across the board later this year.
