Earth Day Efforts Encouraged Californians To Share “Acts of Green” On Social Media

For Earth Day, several ad agencies, including Lowe Campbell Ewald, Lowe Profero, Ogilvy and Momentum, created a campaign for a California initiative called Earth Day for Energy Upgrade California which encouraged state residents to take action to save energy and conserve resources. The organization is supported by an alliance between state utility and energy agencies, individual utilities, municipal governments, businesses and non-profits.The campaign was three-fold with social media central to the effort. Utilizing Earth Day’s long-standing Billion Acts of Green initiative, the campaign asked Californians and organizations in the state to share their “acts of green” using the hashtags #StayGoldenCA and #BillionActsOfGreen via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social platforms.Join me and @EnergyUpgradeCA by greening out your profile! #BillionActsofGreen#StayGoldenCAhttp://t.co/sHd9AGCle9http://pic.twitter.com/tyFz1YIVwt— Acterra (@planetacterra) April 17, 2015 I take short showe…

Size Matters: Phablets Reach 20 Percent Penetration Of Smartphone Market

When it comes to smartphones (screen) size matters. According to data from Flurry (Yahoo), so-called phablets now constitute 20 percent of all active smartphones globally. That’s up from roughly 3 percent two years ago and up from 6 percent in January 2014.Many analysts blame the ballooning screen size of smartphones for humbling and slowing sales of tablets. I suspect we would see better mobile conversion rates on phablets than conventional smartphones if those data were segmented out.Phablets are classified by Flurry (and others) as devices with screen sizes between 5 and 7 inches. Here’s Flurry’s breakdown of screen sizes:In Asia larger-screen smartphones now represent 50 percent of the active user base. The iPhone 6 Plus has seen its greatest success in those markets. While larger form factor devices have been quite successful; it’s not universal across devices and markets.Google indicated on its most recent earnings call, for example, that early demand for the Nexus 6 has given w…

You can now Embed Classic MS-DOS Games into your Tweets

Games didn’t use to be so complex and you definitely couldn’t dream of making $1 billion in the first 3 days of sales. Twenty years back or so, people were playing MS-DOS games, and I’m afraid nowadays one is going to enjoy them only if he’s been around at the time. But you could now have one more reason to try and play them – it’s now possible to embed a whole game into your tweet. And before you think – ‘whoa, a whole game’, let’s not forget that in many cases we’re talking about a couple of hundreds of KBs or a few MBs, which is nothing for today’s amounts of data. The Internet Archive, a non-profit digital library which is better known for its Wayback Machine, has preserved a lot of MS-DOS games on its servers.

And now, if you share the web address of such a game that’s hosted on their website into a tweet, and view it on the web, then the embedded game will become playable within said tweet. It’s a nice little trick that I’m sure will impress your geeky friends. However, you should…

E-Commerce: Smartphone Traffic Grows 269 Pct, 90 Pct Of Carts Abandoned

Since Black Friday 2014 e-retailers have come to recognize that smartphones are now a major force in online shopping. However conversions remain a challenge for most e-commerce sites. The latest data from MarketLive reflect this as well, showing tremendous growth in smartphone traffic but more limited growth in smartphone transactions.According to the company’s Q1 report (drawn from its client base):Smartphone visits grew by 269 percent over Q1 2014, which was 27 percent of total trafficSmartphone orders were up 104 percent, and reached 13 percent of all transactionsOverall mobile devices (including tablets) represented 41 percent of traffic in Q1 2015. But they generated only 26 percent of total e-commerce sales. It’s interesting to note that tablets’ share of traffic and revenue are identical, though overall tablet traffic and revenue are declining.MarketLive pointed out what may be obvious but is still important: e-commerce sites are leaving mobile money on the table. Smartphone “t…

Everything Marketers Want To Know About Social Media Marketing But Are Too Afraid To Ask

More often than not, marketers and the companies they work for have limited resources. Unless you have an infinite amount of time or money, driving success on every single social channel is simply unrealistic. So, what should you focus on as a marketer? Today, I’m addressing real business questions that every marketer should consider.I was recently on a panel with speakers from LinkedIn and Facebook where we discussed social channels available to businesses and how to optimize your presence on them.Over 1,000 marketing professionals attended the event, and there were hundreds of great questions. I’ve compiled a list of the the top questions that every marketer wants to know but is too afraid to ask — these are the actual questions (and paraphrased answers), simply stripped of any personal information (name, company name, etc).Q: What Are The Two Social Media Platforms I Should Be On?A: It really depends on what type of business you are and your objectives for the campaign. If you are s…

It’s the second day of Microsoft’s annual developers conference, Build, happening in San Francisco. Once again, it’s opening with a keynote. We’re live blogging it, but be forewarned. Unless you’re a developer, it’s likely to be incredibly boring. So why bother live blogging it? Hey, you never know. We don’t know exactly what will covered, but Microsoft is likely to dive deeper into the key focus of yesterday’s keynote. That was how iOS and Android apps can be easily converted, according to Microsoft, for use on Windows 10 devices. Our story yesterday has more about this: How Microsoft Plans For Windows 10 To Rule The World By Leveraging iOS & Android. Today’s keynote will probably have more details on how developers can actually do some of this stuff. Top 20 Most Useful Mobile Business Apps For 2015

During the last two years, I’ve annually dedicated one of the 12 mobile marketing articles I write for Marketing Land to covering some of the most useful mobile business apps available. My methodology isn’t scientific. I use a mixture of my own experiences along with some crowd-sourced suggestions from a narrow group of friends — entrepreneurs, business leaders, and in general, people who tend to spend a lot of time on the road.Of course, there are a ton more apps that I could cover. But the goal here is to give you ideas for some useful apps that you should consider adding to your smartphone. While this article veers slightly from my regular focus of delivering insights to marketers specifically interested in mobile and location-based technologies, there is a greater point to make here: As someone who has pushed marketers to think long and hard about the need for a mobile app, the list below should serve as a good example of technologies that are serving the simple to complex needs of …

Want to Make a Tech Presentation Like Hugo Barra? Try These 8 Tips!

When Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra launched the Mi 4i in India, people were impressed as much by the device as by the quality of the presentation that accompanied it (we DID say he was channeling Jobs, remember?). A number of senior journalists confessed that they had not seen anything like it on Indian soil, and we have had our share of queries from competitors about links to the presentation (we are embedding it at the end), as well as inquiries about what did he do to make such an impact. Was it his charisma? His reputation? The venue? The hi-tech wizardry at his disposal? Well, all those played their part, but the truth is that what really worked for him was actually a very rigid focus on his key presentation basics. Basics that can be learnt and adhered to by just about anybody ready to put in the time (sorry, no way around that – you need to work for weeks to get something like this right). So if you want to make a tech presentation like Hugo Barra, just try incorporating these eight point…

NewFronts 2015: YouTube Opens Brandcast With Audience Metrics & Closes With Bruno Mars

YouTube had the entire audience on their feet and dancing by the end of its NewFronts Brandcast presentation in the Theater at Madison Square Gardens last night. After bringing to the stage YouTube stars Grace Helbig and iJustine, author John Green, and even the president of BuzzFeed Motion Pictures Ze Frank, YouTube closed the show with Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson performing their hit Uptown Funk.Mars and Ronson weren’t the only rockstars at Brandcast. Nate Ruess, the lead singer from the band Fun, took the stage mid-show to perform “Nothing Without Love.”Before turning it into a rock concert, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki kicked off the presentation highlighting YouTube audience metrics. She said the site now reaches more 18 to 49 year olds on mobile than any cable network, and the number of people visiting YouTube daily has grown 40 percent year-over-year.Four of YouTube’s top ten trending videos in 2014 were from brands. Wojcicki also said viewers are skipping fewer TrueView ads, “In fa…

Microsoft Gets Agressive with the Lumia 430, its Cheapest Lumia Yet at Rs. 5,299

After acquiring Nokia’s devices and services division, Microsoft has obtained full control over the Lumia line of products, which is its front division in the hard battle against the iPhone and the army of Androids. The company has now unveiled its cheapest Lumia handset, the Lumia 430, which gets launched for a price of Rs. 5.299 (about $83).The smartphone comes wtih a 4-inch WVGA (480×800 pixels) LCD display, has a 2MP primary camera along with a VGA secondary camera. Of course, nothing too fancy in this department, but then again, you couldn’t be expecting for more, judging by its price. And even if you find better specs, Microsoft is betting on the power of its brand, as well. The handset is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor with 1GB RAM, and there’s 8GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB with a microSD card. However, you should know that comes with 30GB of free OneDrive cloud storage, so if you feel comfortable with this method, yo…

LG G4 Confirms the Premium-Mainstream Split in Android Flagships

When LG unveiled its G4 flagship day before, it rounded off the flagship fleet for the current Android generation, the most notable of which are the Samsung S6 Edge, the HTC One M9, the Sony Xperia Z4, the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, the Honor 6 Plus, the Nexus 6, the Moto Turbo, the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro, the Asus ZenFone 2, and the OnePlus One.Cast a look at that list, factor in the fact that most pundits expect the LG G4 to cost in the vicinity of (and some even say well in excess of) USD 650, and a divide becomes visible. On the one hand, you have devices that offer a premium experience at a premium price (generally well above USD 600 and some even close to four figures) in which you have the likes of the One M9, the Xperia Z4, the S6 Edge, the Nexus 6 (oh, the irony!), the Moto Turbo and the G4, and on the other you have devices that claim to offer a similar experience but at prices that are lower, and in some cases, embarrassingly lower than what the premium priced flagships cost – for ins…

New: Twitter Makes Promoted Tweets Less Obvious

Promoted Tweets are getting more subtle. Twitter has quietly removed the yellow badge from its main ad unit, hoping to to make its native advertising content look a bit more native. The change started to roll out today on the web and mobile devices globally, a Twitter spokesperson told us, and is intended to make Promoted Tweets blend more seamlessly with Twitter content while still being clearly labeled as advertising. For compliance reasons, the purple badge for political Promoted Tweets will remain. Yellow badges will also continue to display with Promoted Trends and Promoted Accounts. Here’s how Promoted Tweets used to look:And here’s the new version:This move brings Twitter’s ad labeling more inline with some of its social media competitors — including Pinterest, LinkedIn and Faceboook — who also use text to call attention to in-stream ads.The post New: Twitter Makes Promoted Tweets Less Obvious appeared first on Marketing Land.
