Reddit updates self-serve ad-buying tool with conversion tracking, audience reporting

Reddit will give advertisers a better idea of who saw their ads and how many of those people wound up on a brand’s site, even if they didn’t click on an ad.On Monday, Reddit announced that it will officially update its self-serve ad-buying tool to provide more granular campaign reporting. Among the new additions are performance breakdowns based on target audience and conversion tracking through the conversion pixel Reddit released in August 2017. Brands have had the option of upgrading to the new advertising dashboard for a few weeks, but now Reddit will roll out the updated version as the default interface. The updated ads dashboard improves upon Reddit’s existing interface that centers on table-stakes statistics, such as a campaign’s average CPC and CPM, as well as top-level performance metrics, including the number of impressions and clicks an ad received.Advertisers will now be able to see how many of their ads impressions were delivered to their target audiences. Prepare for the discovery-driven, visual-obsessed shopper this holiday

Retail marketers often use “visual search” and “visual discovery” interchangeably to refer to the use of images and videos to find products. But as the visual world evolves, these terms are diverging to encompass separate parts of the customer journey. Visual search implies intent. Visual discovery implies curiosity. While platforms like Google are well-suited for capturing consumers who know what they’re seeking, Pinterest and Instagram also can excel in those moments when consumers roam online and stumble upon brands and products that excite them. This distinction is important to understand as consumers develop new expectations around the purpose and capabilities of visuals in their online shopping experiences. Increasingly, consumers want media such as lifestyle images, shop-by-look features and photo-recognition tools to cater not to just search, but also to discovery. As a result, retail marketers are rethinking what visual discovery means for their strategies, particularly with the…

Fake ads, Russians and regulation: Facebook, Google and Twitter face a moment of crisis

Even as a handful of internet companies are consolidating their control over online advertising and commerce, they confront a moment of crisis and vulnerability. Facebook, Twitter and, to a lesser degree, Google are facing changing advertiser and consumer attitudes, government hostility and challenges to their credibility. While bot fraud, ad blocking viewability and brand safety issues have been around for some time, the Russian government’s manipulation of advertising and organic content on Facebook, Twitter and Google is a fresh crisis with long-term implications for these companies. How they deal with it will be critical in determining whether they avoid regulation and can restore public confidence.Last week, in prepared testimony, Facebook’s General Counsel Colin Stretch said the following:Our best estimate is that approximately 126 million people may have been served content from a Page associated with the [Russian company] IRA at some point during the two-year period. This equal…

Smartpipe looks to solve GDPR-compliant ad targeting by treating identifiers as ‘snowflakes’

A London-based company has come up with a way to target ads that can satisfy both marketers and GDPR.The central problem is that marketers target ads at specific individuals or groups of individuals, as consistently identified by cookies, mobile device IDs, digital fingerprinting or other techniques. But the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) prohibits marketers from employing unique persistent identifiers for any citizen in the European Union (EU), unless explicit user consent is granted for each use. And that’s impractical for current ad targeting and retargeting, since it would involve the user clicking permission every time an advertiser wanted to show them a specific ad.Smartpipe attempts to solve that problem for users inside a mobile network by creating a temporary identifying token that is tied to the event — such as the targeting of a single ad — and not to the individual.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]
